This table shows that the total number of unemployed people in the two parliamentary constituencies of Thanet is (2157 + 1747) = 3904

The percentages shown above can be used to determine the total work-force on which these figures are based.

North Thanet Males (100 ¸ 7.0) x 1673 =   23,900
North Thanet Females (100 ¸ 2.9) x 484 =  16,690
Total                                                             40,590

South Thanet Males (100 ¸ 6.4) x 1354 =  21,156
South Thanet Females (100 ¸ 2.6) x 393 = 15,115
Total                                                            36,271

Total for Thanet                                           76,861

Total Unemployed                                         3,904

Total Employed                                            72,957

Percentage Unemployment                             5.1%

It is clear that the vast majority ( 94.9% ) of people in Thanet are employed.

Looking at other parliamentary constituencies in the UK it is clear that the rate of female unemployment is almost always significantly less than the rate of male unemployment. It is usually in the range of 0.50 to 0.75 X the rate of male unemployment.

Suppose we were aiming to alter the ratio of female : male unemployment to the national norm of 0.5. At the same time we are aiming to reduce overall unemployment to the regional average of 3.5%.

North Thanet

If the unemployment rate were to be reduced to 3.5% , there would be (3.5 ¸ 100) x 40,590 = 1420 people unemployed

Let the number of unemployed males be m

The number of unemployed females is then ( 1420 - m)

Let % male unemployment be M

Let % female unemployment be F

M = (m ¸ 23,900) X 100

And

F = [(1420 - m) ¸ 16,690] X 100

But M = 2F (because we are aiming to make the rate of female unemployment half the rate of male unemployment)

\ (m ¸ 23,900) X 100 = 2 X [(1420 - m) ¸ 16,690] X 100

m = 1052

If we do a similar analysis for South Thanet, we find m = 936

Putting the results into plain English, if the rate of unemployment in the two parliamentary constituencies of North and South Thanet were to be reduced to the regional average of 3.5 %, and the ratio of male unemployment to female unemployment were to be improved to 2 :

Number of unemployed males = 1052 (North Thanet)+ 936 (South Thanet) = 1988

Number of unemployed females = 368 (North Thanet) + 334 (South Thanet) = 702

Total number of unemployed 2690

It follows that in order to reach this situation the following number of jobs needs to be created :

North Thanet

Males (1673 - 1052) = 621

Females ( 484 - 368) = 116

Total 737

South Thanet

Males (1354 - 936) = 418

Females ( 393 - 334) = 59

Total 477

If these are the numbers of jobs required to bring us into line with the regional average, where are the thousands of workers to come from to fill the jobs which are supposed to be created at the airport ?
