20th January 1999 We have heard a lot about the potential benefits of Manston airport, primarily jobs. Here are a few of the less publicly acclaimed effects: Manston Airport will affect areas much further a field than Ramsgate. Our children may be affected. Recent studies have found that the reading age of children, at schools situated in the flight path of busy airports, may be up to 9 months behind that of children in less noisy locations. Depreciation of property prices is likely to occur if Manston is allowed to operate without controls. In the village of Spelbrook, 4 miles from Stansted homes are known to have lost 15% of their value as a result of expansion in the early '90's. Properties nearer the airfield may prove impossible to sell. Your health may be affected. The Schipol study reported increased sales of anti-hypertensive (blood pressure) drugs to those exposed to airport-noise. Dangerous ozone gas will be formed. A Boeing 747 burns one ton of fuel during take-off and that equates to a lot of fumes. At Heathrow, BAA makes more profit from retail and duty-free sales than it does from airlines. Travellers do not spend their money locally. Why should Manston be different ?
