Report to Manston Airport
Consultative Committee -5th July 2001
Section 106 Agreement -Atmospheric
Pollution Monitoring )
1. Section 7 of Schedule 2 of the above
Agreement required the installation of three passive atmospheric pollution tubes
to provide background pollution data. The data flowing from the monitoring is to
be reported to the Council and the MACC.
2. The airport requested the Council to
undertake the installation and monitoring on their behalf as the Council already
undertakes atmospheric pollution monitoring across Thanet. The airport
reimburses the Council for all costs incurred.
3. It was agreed with the airport that
the most appropriate pollutant to monitor as an indicator of jet aircraft
pollution would be Benzene. Accordingly three sites were chosen and passive
tubes installed at each site. The attached map shows the location of the sites.
4. In addition to the three new sites
the Council already measures Benzene at five other locations across Thanet. The
UK Air Quality Objective for Benzene is 16.25 UGM-3 or 5 parts per billion.
5. The results this year for the five
existing sites are as shown below. ;

7. Passive diffusion tubes provide a
scientifically recognised method of collecting background data over a twelve
month period. The monthly readings provided are simply to offer an indication as
to the readings gained to date.
