Friday April 7th Racing Post The local authority with ultimate responsibility for deciding the fate of the proposed new racecourse at Fairlop Waters in Essex has stressed "It is not a done deal". Redbridge Council decided to act out of concern that the crucial issue of planning permission required for the £40 million scheme championed by the Wiggins Group has been virtually overlooked in much of the publicity that followed the BHB's decision on Monday provisionally to approve London City racecourse. Chief communications officer Maxine Bradley is dismayed that many residents of the borough are under the impression that the proposed all-weather track--with 31 meetings a year, a nightclub ,hotel, health and fitness center, helipad and commuter parking for several thousand vehicles--is now a formality. She has released a statement outlining five essential facts regarding the project which will be reviewed by Redbridge's planning committee next month. Explaining the reasoning behind the release, Bradley writes; "The council feels it should assist race fans, the betting fraternity and particulerly local people by pulling the reins before the Wiggins plan bolts out of control." Bradley lists the following points: Wiggins do not own the land; the land is green belt; Fairlop is used for recreational purposes by a great number of Redbridge people on a regular basis; there is no plans on the part of Redbridge council to sell its interest in Fairlop; local people have strongly expressed their opposition to the development of the green belt land. The statement concludes:"A racecourse for London may well prove to be popular in future, but it remains considerably less than 'a cert' that it will be built on Redbridge's Fairlop Plain." Bradley added; "It is certainly not a done deal." |
