UK-Invest 1 September 1999 Wiggins Group PLC is pleased to announce that the Civil Aviation Authority has granted it a licence to operate London-Manston Airport for civilian passenger use, in addition to its freight use. The company is further pleased to announce that it has completed its acquisition of RAF Manston from the Ministry of Defence. During the process of the conversion Wiggins invested in excess of £10 million, installing state-of-the-art instrumentation-landing systems capable of handling all airlines, and upgrading the runway, airfield ground lighting and other support systems. The company also plans to upgrade the passenger terminal in the short term to a capacity of 3 million passengers per annum. The company is in advanced negotiations with several passenger airlines for charter and scheduled flights to a number of international destinations to commence early in the New Year. London-Manston continues to attract new business and will exceed fivefold its freight handling forecast for this year, and now will handle 30,000 tonnes for this year, being its year five target. Mike Kruger, the managing director M K Cargo a major carrier of perishables from Africa to Europe, which has recently moved most of its UK capacity to London-Manston said “London-Manston's position and efficiency as operators will make it one of Europe's most important cargo hubs. We wish them every success and are glad to be part of the airport's future.” For further information contact: Christopher Foster Executive Director, Wiggins Group PLC 0171 495 8686 Oliver Iny Chief Executive, Wiggins Group PLC 0171 495 8686 |
