Wiggins eyes 20 European airport network

5th May 11.06 am Reuters News

Copenhagen, May 5th - Britain's Wiggins group expects to include some 20 European regional airports in its PlaneStation network before end 2000, a senior company executive said on Thursday.

" Planestation sees a potential at regional airports for both new low-cost airline operations, and new air cargo routes between such airports within the network, both in and outside Europe," Tony Freudmann, senior vice president Wiggins Group, told Reuters.

He was speaking at an Odense reception to mark Wiggins' taking over operations at the Danish regional airport.

"Wiggins sees its 30 year contract at Odense airport as one element in its European network - now under construction -, which is expected to include over 20 regional airports by the year's end," Freudmann said.

In the Nordic region, Wiggins is seeking contracts with two airports in Sweden, two in Norway, and one in Northern Finland.

In Portugal, Wiggins will include Alentejo Airport, and in Spain Salamanca Airport.

Discussions are also underway with three airports in France (in the Bordeaux region, Normandy, south eastern France regions), two ex-US Air Force bases in Germany, a total of seven airports in Italy, two airports in Poland, one airport in Croatia, and one in the Czech Republic.

Additionally, Wiggins is seeking agreements with about 10 regional airports "elsewhere", including the USA where Smyma Airport near Nashville is already a network member.

Wiggins' and Planestation's first airport is London-Manston Airport in Kent, which is expected to handle 150,000 passengers next year with cargo traffic also reaching 150,000 tonnes.

MAG Comment:-

  1. Interesting that they claim Smyrna is already part of their network when they have not yet signed the lease.
  2. Interesting too that they claim that capacity will not be increased by their 20 acre development at Manston whilst simultaneously claiming that cargo traffic will increase 6 fold, and that passenger traffic will increase to a level never previously seen there.
